The US vision ofmanifest destiny helped to win the publics support for the Mexican war. Yet the public was misled by this sense of manifest destiny and those thatdid support it supported an unjust war. President Polk during his presidency lustedfor more land than the country had ever before controlled. Not onlydid he capture Texas but also California and Oregon. While attemptingto gain California through peaceful means he sent John Slidell to MexicoCity to offer the Mexicans up to $25million dollars for California yetthis offer was rejected by the Mexicans as insulting. This led Polkto frustration and his willingness to try backhanded and sneaky new waysto get the Mexicans to give him the territories that he desired. This showed that Polk was consumed with greed for new territory. He no longer cared how he claimed his no territory. Polk was consumedwith a need to make his campaign promises a reality and to make the prophecyof manifest destiny a reality. His greed for land is evident in hisbehind the back tactics that he attempted to employ against the Mexicans. He also was seeking a form of revenge for the deaths at the Alamo and therefusal of his proposal to buy California from the Mexicans. Polkwas so greedy for land that he was willing to risk blood shed and deathof his citizens for revenge against the rejection of a proposed treatyand his want for manifest destiny. Quite possibly the strongest of all reasonsthat the US was unjust in going to war with Mexico in 1846 was that theUS forces were in the disputed territory too purposely insight the Mexicansinto starting the conflict so the US would look like they were the goodguys in the incident. The climax is ultimately the death of Bill Sikes in this chapter, when Sikes is on that roof ready to try his escape Dickens finally de-humanises the villain at last by instead of calling him Sikes calling him the murderer to tell the audience just exactly what he is, which is nothing. The way Dickens depicts the death of Sikes is very dramatic in the way that he dies, jumping off a roof and accidentally hanging yourself isnt the best way to go or the most common in any story, Dickens used this way of death to give justice, melodrama and a gothic feel which would add real feel to how the audience would feel at the death of a person who has been hated by most throughout the whole story. The speed of Sikes death is quite important, the use of verbs such as staggering, tumbled, which is when Sikes loses his balance and goes over the edge of the building. Sikes death is also set at night time to add a little more drama and a chase factor to the dramatic end. The noose in those times was common for convicted murderers to receive when arrested, so for Sikes to die in a noose was justified in the end. Faith in A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings      Ã‚   In Gabriel Garcia Marquez's short story, "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings," an unexpected visitor comes down from the sky, and seems to test the faith of a community. The villagers have a difficult time figuring out just how the very old man with enormous wings fits into their lives. Because this character does not agree with their conception of what an angel should look like, they try to determine if the aged man could actually be an angel. In trying to prove the origin of their visitor, the villagers lose faith in the possibility of him being an angel because he does not adhere to their ordered world. Marquez keeps the identity of the very old man with enormous wings ambiguous to critique the villagers and, more generally, organized religion for having a lack of faith to believe in miracles that do not comply with their master narrative. In order to keep the origin of the old man a mystery, Marquez uses a technique known as magical realism. This combination of reality and fantasy helps to remove some of the grandeur behind the potential angel. When the old man is first introduced he does not descend from heaven in a blaze of light and glory, but rather lands in a "stew of mud and rotten shellfish" (313), during a storm that had lasted for three days. To investigate the "moving and groaning in the rear of the courtyard" Pelayo "had to go very close to see that it was an old man, a very old man, lying face down in the mud, who, in spite of his tremendous efforts, couldn't get up, impended by his enormous wings" (313). This description is hardly the image that one would conjure up when visualizing an angel coming down from the heavens. During the war Hitler was injured and narrowly escaped death in battle several times and he was awarded two iron crosses for his bravery during WW1. Hitler rose to the rank of corporal but his commanding officers saw no potential for him becoming a leader. In 1916 he was wounded by an enemy shell and was evacuated to a Berlin hospital. After serving four years in the trench he was temporarily blinded in a gas attack in 1918 and took no further part in the war. While Hitler was recovering, communist insurrections shook Germany and many of these were lead by Jews which again furthered his hatred for them. On November 9th 1918 the Kaiser abdicated and the socialists gained control through the election but now anarchy ruled the cities. During these times of anarchy the free corps formed, which were army veterans who banded together, to fight the communists as most army soldiers were right wing and hated communists. Germany had lost the war and their monarchy and so a republic was proclaimed.
